Many years ago going to the cinema in Switzerland implied a small theatre with velours seats and an interlude with ice cream. Back in the 90′, almost 20 years after the rest of the world, the cinema industry finally caught up with the multiplex craze, beginning with Zurich’s 10-screen Cinemax theater, now called Abaton. While that was the largest multiplex in Switzerland , the French cinema chain Pathé has meanwhile expanded its own empire to include Bern, Lausanne, Luzern, Dietlikon, Basel and geneva, where it operates the biggest multi-screen cinema in the country, the cinema Balexert.
But the Pathé management is among those fighting back with avant-garde promotional and sales ideas, such as private viewings – for those who can afford it, an entire cinema for you and 700 of your pals – and the Kino Pathé Dietlikon close to Zurich is providing with shows of live Opera performances from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. An original bit of promise for a part of our culture threatened by progress.
